Chapter Eleven

When Bedwyr woke to find Arthur still in his bed, he decided it was going to be another good day.

His stump tingled, his arm having played pillow to Arthur’s head all night. Carefully, he eased out from under him. Arthur sighed and rolled onto his back, his rangy shoulders moving into the space Bedwyr had just vacated to shift his arm. It gave him an opportunity to study the man who had moved against him hours before.

He was a grown man, if only just. Even in the hazy light of dawn he could see the strong bones of Arthur’s face that had displaced the relative softness of boyhood. His skin was winter-pale and freckled. Strong, straight eyebrows gave him an expressive face when he was awake. In sleep, they made him look more serious, leading the eye to the long, hard ridge of his nose. His lips rested slack, just enough to see the edges of his teeth. A fine, pale scar bisected the bottom lip, and Bedwyr vaguely recalled Cai busting it during a tussle. Or three.

Arthur’s beard was a darker red than his other hair and hadn’t filled in as much as it might later. Letting his eyes wander downward, Bedwyr spotted the pulse that beat in the man’s throat and in the hollow between his collar bones. He followed one ridge of bone to Arthur’s shoulder and the dark blue figure on his upper arm.

Arthur had had it forever, it seemed—a tattoo badly done because in a moment of poor judgment he’d given it to himself. Bedwyr still remembered the gathering of the village in the meeting hall when Arthur had apologized for stealing Dafydd’s ink and needle. He’d insulted their people’s tradition, claiming ink before he’d earned it as a warrior. Cai had been especially incensed, since he and Bedwyr had just earned their own first tattoos. Their people had lived in relative peace then, so he and Cai hadn’t seen a fight, had only to complete their first patrol to get inked. Evidently even that had been enough for Arthur to covet. As punishment, Uthyr had demanded Arthur apologize to their entire village. Bedwyr had felt pride in his own tattoo and shared some of Cai’s sense of injustice. All the same, he’d felt for Arthur as the skinny lad stood alone before their neighbors to face their disapproval.

He wasn’t so skinny anymore. With a cautious hand, Bedwyr lifted the blankets away, revealing Arthur’s chest and belly. The lines of his body were flatter here than Bedwyr’s, and all of them drew his attention downward. He wanted to shove his fingers into the thatch of hair around Arthur’s prick. The cock itself rested in the crease of his groin. His stones hung one above the other in a sac Bedwyr wanted to lick. He settled for grazing a thumb across Arthur’s thigh.

Arthur blinked awake. His quick eyes took in the hut, the state of the blankets, and Bedwyr’s roving hand. As Arthur began to focus on him, Bedwyr realized he hadn’t thought this far ahead.
